Nehellenia is the beautiful Queen of the Dead Moon Circus that appears first in episode 148.
As a child during the Silver
Millennium, she grew up with the praise and admiration of her court, but she was lonely because
she had no friends other than herself. Because of her lonliness, she often stood in front of
her mirror, ultimately deciding that she was her own best friend, and that she was the only
person upon whom she could depend. As she grew older, she became extremely beautiful, but also
cold and isolated. She fell in love with her own beauty and wished to remain beautiful forever,
so she asked her mirror what the future of her wish would be. The mirror showed her an old
and ugly woman, much to her horror. She became determined to find a way to stay beautiful. She
soon learned that by eating the Dream Mirrors of the people of her Kingdom, she could maintain
her beauty. The lost souls whose dreams were stolen became the Dead Moon Circus. Soon, she
was all alone once again. She began watching the beautiful White Moon Kingdom from afar,
jealous of it and whishing to take it as her own, but Queen Serenity banished her to the depths
of the New Moon where she stayed isolated and alone in darkness. She soon learned of an item
that would give her the power to take the Moon as well as the Earth - the Golden Crystal.
Helios, guardian of the crystal, confronted her and told her that she could not take control
of the crystal because she had an evil heart, and only those with beautiful dreams could touch
it. When she tried to take it, flames surrounded it and it burned her. She captured Helios
and kept him as her prisoner, locked inside of her palace. In return, Queen Serenity trapped
Nehellenia inside of her mirror, locked in a deep sleep. Unfortunately, Helios was trapped with
her, but he managed to escape in spirit, in the form of Pegasus, into a Dream Mirror on Earth.
She is later awakened by the laughter of the Amazones Quartetto, and she gives the girls Amazon Stones and extra powers. Still sealed inside her mirror, she comes to Earth during an eclipse and sets up the Dead Moon Circus in Tokyo in order to search for the Dream Mirror containing Helios (still in the form of Pegasus), and steal the Golden Crystal from him. She finally manages to capture Helios and steal the Golden Crystal. However, when she isn't looking, the Amazones Quartetto betrays her and, and they replace the crystal with a pineapple, giving the crystal to the Sailor Senshi. The senshi use the crystal to destroy the Dead Moon Circus. The furious Queen Nehellenia kidnaps Sailor ChibiMoon and ascends into the sky upon a broken piece of the Circus tent with Sailor Moon close behind her. At the top, the beautiful queen grows old, turning into the vision that she had seen in the mirror so long ago. She tells Sailor Moon her story, and throws ChibiMoon into the air. She then reseals herself in her mirror, accepting solitude in order to remain beautiful forever.
In episode 167 (the first episode of the Sailor Stars season), a mysterious voice awakens her
from her sleep within the mirror, telling her that it is a shame for her beauty to be locked away
forever. The voice urges Nehellenia not to forgive her enemies, and to break the seal that was
placed on herself her by shattering her mirror. She breaks the mirror, and it shatters into millions
of pieces which fall to the Earth, appearing as shooting stars. The shards embed themselves in
the people of Tokyo, taking over their minds and causing them to become obsessed with their own
reflections. A shard falls into Mamoru's eye, and because of this, she is able to kidnap him
and take him into her Kingdom in order to hurt the Moon Princess. Since he has been kidnapped,
ChibiUsa begins to fade from existence. Sailor Moon decides to go after her alone, but the
other senshi follow in order to save the future. The Queen manages to separate the senshi,
tricking them with illusions and trapping them within mirrors when they become weak until Sailor
Moon is the only one left. She batters Usagi, telling her that she will never understand her
lonliness. Despite the abuse, Usagi tells her that she does understand, taking pity on her.
Usagi's tears break Nehellenia's spell, freeing Mamoru and the other senshi. Usagi transforms
into Eternal Sailor Moon and it is revealed that Nehellenia's original dream was to have friends,
although that dream became twisted somewhere along the way. Eternal Sailor Moon assures the
Queen that she can have her dream, and as she begins to cry, her mirror is destroyed. At the
end of episode 172, Queen Nehellenia awakens from her nightmare as a child, remembering everything
simply as a bad dream. She is given a chance to start over. Queen Nehellenia's seiyuu are
Yoshiko Sakakibara
(as an adult) and
Wakana Yamazaki (as a child).
Queen Nehellenia claimed to be the true Queen of the Moon Kingdom during the Silver millennium.
She was filled with evil, and was therefore not invited to the celebration held in honor of the
birth of Princess Serenity. At the celebration, she appeared in the shadows, furious that she
had not been invited. The senshi, sensing that she was evil, asked her identity. Queen Serenity
told her that she could only be welcomed if she sought peace, but that she could not allow her
to bring evil and darkness. Nehellenia claimed that she and Serenity were of the same origin, and
that there could be no light without darkness, no good without evil. Queen Serenity used the power
of the Ginzuishou to seal Nehellenia within a mirror. As she was sealed away, she put a
curse upon the newborn Princess Serenity, saying that she would die before she inherited the throne.
Many years later, she was awakened by Zirconia, though still trapped within the mirror. An eclipse
on Earth allowed her power to reach the planet, causing Mamoru to fall ill and nightmares to
spread across Earth. Because she felt that she was the true Queen of the Moon Kingdom, she
also felt that she was the rightful owner of the Ginzuishou. She sent her minions, the members
of the Dead Moon Circus, to Earth to retrieve the Ginzuishou from Sailor Moon. The senshi shatter
her mirror to try to destroy her, but she managed to escape into Elysion, where her powers grew
stronger. She eventually obtained the ginzuishou, but Mamoru used his love for Usagi along with the
power of the Golden Crystal to retrieve it. Combining his power with Usagi's, Usagi transformed
into Super Sailor Moon. Surounded by the power of the Ginzuishou, Queen Nehellenia turned into
an old woman. She was defeated and sealed back within her mirror.
