He was one of the Seven Great Youma
of the Dark Kingdom who were loyal to Queen Beryl during the Silver Millennium and participated in her
invasion of the Moon Kingdom. Ultimately, Queen Serenity imprisoned them in seven separate shards of the
Ginzuishou, known as the Nijizuishou
(Rainbow Crystals) because each one was a different color of the rainbow. In the present day, they were reincarnated into
seven individuals (six humans and one cat) with no memory of their existence as youma. Gesen was sealed within the red
Nijizuishou, and was reincarnated as Crane Game Joe,
a young man who used his telekinetic powers to win crane games at various arcades. Zoisite
used his Kurozuishou to locate Joe, and attacked him
one day as he was leaving Game Center Crown. Makoto attacked Zoisite, temporarily thwarting his efforts. Unfortunately,
Zoisite was able to locate Joe again at the small cafe Tour de Corse.
Joe ran away, but Zoisite quickly caught up and managed to completely extract the Nijizuishou from Joe. Once the crystal
emerged, Joe immediately turned into the youma Gesen.
Once in his youma form, Gesen immediately began to attack Sailor Moon. He pressed a few buttons on a control pad on his arm, causing a long, spiked sledgehammer to emerge from his arm and swing towards Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon managed to narrowly miss the attack, but she was soon captured in Gesen's crane-like arm. Makoto quickly transformed into Sailor Jupiter (for the first time) and attacked him with "Supreme Thunder," breaking his hold on Sailor Moon. Just as Sailor Jupiter moved to attack again, Luna reminded her that the youma still had the heart of a human. She said that they must turn the youma back into a human. Thus, Sailor Moon used "Moon Healing Escalation" to heal Joe, causing him to transform back into a human.
Gesen's name comes from the word "gesen," a popular Japanese abbreviation of "game center." Both Crane Game Joe and Gesen have the same seiyuu: Masaaki Ohkura.
