Gurio Umino appears first in episode 001.
He is usually called by his family name, "Umino." He is a friend of Usagi and
Naru, and he attends Juuban Junior High School
with them. He is very smart and makes excellent grades, but he is also strange and geeky. He often suddenly appears in unusual places, seeming to come out
of nowhere. However, he is full of useful knowledge and gossip about secondary characters in the series. He gives the girls
additional information about characters such as Mikan Shiratori
and Higure Akiyama. His seiyuu is
Keiichi Nanba, who also does the voice
for Zoisite.
In the beginning of the first season, he has a crush on Usagi, although she does not share the same feelings. Later, he sees that Naru is kind and loving, and develops a relationship with her in which he cares for her immensely. In Episode 95, the couple wins an affection contest. In the SuperS Special, Ami-chan no Hatsukoi, we find out that he uses the pseudonym GuriGuri Hakasei (meaning "Professor Squiggles") for exams, and that he knows Mercurius (Suri Kurume). His last appearance is in Sailor Moon SuperS.
In episode 032, Umino briefly took on the
alter ego of "Tuxedo Umino Kamen" in order to woo Naru after Usagi told him how charming and romantic Tuxedo Kamen was. Umino
wore a tuxedo, cape, and top hat and followed the girls around the city "protecting" them from things such as a barking dog
on the street and from spending all of their money in the arcade. Naru and Umino went to a show at an amusement park
together, where Zoisite attempted to turn Naru into a youma (in an attempt to draw Sailor Moon into the open). He missed his
target, however, and turned the actor in the show into the youma Akan, who began attacking the crowd. Just as Akan was
attacking Naru, "Tuxedo Umino Kamen" appeared and confronted him, throwing fried shrimp at him before being severely
wounded and knocked unconscoius. Luckily, Sailor Moon healed the youma with Moon Healing Escalation, ending the battle.
Afterwards, Naru told Umino that he was "very cool" for fighting the youma.
In episode 005, Umino tells Naru and Usagi that he was bitten by an alligator
when he was a baby. In reality, he was closed inside an alligator-skin handbag.
Gurio Umino appears first in Act 01, Volume 01 of the manga. He is usually called by his family
name, "Umino." He does not play as large a role in the manga as he does in the anime, and is
a very minor character. He is a friend of Usagi and her best friend Naru Osaka. He is very
intelligent, but is also arrogant about this fact. In Act 01, he complains about not feeling
well because he only got a 95 on the English test. He is a bit of a know-it-all, but also
an excellent source of information. He keeps his classmates informed on the latest news about
Sailor V, Sailor Moon, and new students in the school like Mizuno Ami and Makoto Kino.
