Rei's Grandfather (Ojii-san)

ANIME

Rei's grandfather (whom she cals "Ojii-san") appeared first in episode 010, when both Rei and Hikawa Jinja appear. He is very lively and energetic. Much to Rei's embarrassment, he enjoys flirting with everyone, regardless of gender. He often tries to persuade attractive young shrine visitors to work there part-time. He is older and very short, but nonetheless extremely athletic. Although he appeared several times in the series, his real name was never given. His seiyuu was Tomomichi Nishimura.

First appearance: Rei's grandfather made his first appearance in episode 010, flirting with several young girls (including Usagi and her friends). Rei explained to them that her grandfather liked to flirt with everyone, regardless of gender, and ask them to work part-time at the shrine. For this reason, he made Jadeite a live-in shrine helper when he visited a few days earlier. Eventually, Jadeite was discovered and forced to give up his position at the shrine.

Nijizuishou carrier: Rei's grandfather made another major appearance in episode 030. In the beginning of the episode, Zoisite appeared and attempted to extract the indigo Nijizuishou from him. Due to his training, he was able to fight back and prevent the crystal from being removed, although the attempt to remove it did have some impact on him. He became very emotionally unstable, yelling one minute, crying the next. Zoisite soon came back, and this time, he was able to completely remove and collect the Nijizuishou, causing Rei's grandfather to transform into the youma Jiji. Fortunately, Sailor Moon was ultimately able to heal Jiji with Moon Healing Escalation, and he was returned to his human form as Rei's grandfather. Later, in episode 041, Endymion (who had been brainwashed and was working with the Dark Kingdom) attempted to capture all seven former Nijizuishou carriers and trap them within the Kurozuishou. The Dark Kingdom hoped that although the former youma had been healed by Sailor Moon, they would be able to use their energy and the power of the Kurozuishou to transform them back into youma. After they were reunited, it was hoped that they would come together to form one extremely powerful youma to destroy the Sailor Senshi. Rei's grandfather was the only former Nijizuishou carrier that Endymion was not able to catch before Sailor Mercury destroyed the Kurozuishou.

Manga

Because of her falling out with her father, Rei went to live with her maternal grandfather, head priest at Hikawa Jinja. He is her closest family. He is a very lively and energetic man. In the manga, he is much more serious than in the anime. He does not chase girls much - there is only one instance in which he asked the other girls if they'd like to work at the shrine, causing Rei to blush. Although Rei thinks that her future is as a priestess at the shrine, her grandfather knows that she is destined to go on to greater things. Rei's grandpa look VERY different in the anime than in the manga - he is much younger, and has a moustache.
