Moon Kingdom (Silver Millennium)

The Moon Kingdom, known as the Silver Millennium, was a peaceful kingdom on the moon that existed in the ancient past. "Silver Millennium" refers to both the Moon Kingdom and the era in which it existed.

The Moon Kingdom was first mentioned and seen in episode 035. In the distant past, it was inhabited by a race of humanoid life forms who led very long lives compared with the humans of Earth. Their ruler was Queen Serenity, mother of Princess Serenity. In episode 044, the spirit of Queen Serenity said that the mission of people of the moon was "to protect the sacred will passed down to us on the moon, the Maboroshi no Ginzuishou, and to watch over and aid the progression of Earth's evolution." Unfortunately, during Princess Serenity's life time, a war erupted between the people of the Earth and the people of the moon. In the present day, nothing remains of the Moon Kingdom; it was completely destroyed during the war.

The complete story of the Moon Kingdom and the war that destroyed it was told in a series of flashbacks in episode 044. Metallia was an evil entity who sought the power of the Ginzuishou. Metallia possessed Beryl, an Earth woman whom Endymion said was a witch. Beryl in turn brainwashed the people of the Earth, taking advantage of their desire for the longevity of the moon people. She led an army of humans called the Dark Kingdom to attack the Moon Kingdom. A huge explosion blasted the palace, and the four Senshi attempted to use a combined attack against Metallia... unfortunately, it failed. Soon, the Dark Kingdom released an enormous burst of energy which shook everything in the area and caused all Moon Kingdom structures to crumble. The entire Moon Kingdom was devastated by the attack. Beryl attacked Princess Serenity, but Prince Endymion was able to stop her by throwing a rose between the women. Beryl attempted to get him to marry her and give up on the princess, telling him that he could be king of both the Earth and the Moon. He refused, so the wicked woman attacked again, this time killing the prince and princess. Queen Serenity used the power of the Ginzuishou with "Moon Healing Escalation" to utterly destroy the Dark Kingdom. During the battle, everyone on the moon was killed: humans as well as moon citizens. Queen Serenity used the last of her strength to seal away Metallia and send the moon kingdom inhabitants back to Earth to be reincarnated, with the hope that the princess and Senshi could live happily as normal girls. Before dying, she told Luna and Artemis that the Ginzuishou could be used for peace if it was used with the energy of a good heart. If it was used with the energy of an evil heart, it could become a terrible weapon. She said that she had no way of knowing when or if Metallia would be revived again, But in the event that she was revived, the cats were instructed to make sure Princess Serenity uses the Ginzuishou and Moon Stick to ensure peace.

Did You Know?

In episode 039, it was revealed that ice skating was a very popular activity in the Moon Kingdom, and Princess Serenity was extremely skilled. Kunzite used this information in one of his plots to find Sailor Moon's true identity.
