The star-shaped locket appears in the anime, the manga, and PGSM, although it has a slightly different function (and name) in each version of the series. Its very first appearance was in the manga, and its manga incarnation became the model for the anime and PGSM versions of this object.


ANIME - ORGEL

First Appearance: 026 - Smile, Naru-chan! Usagi's Friendship
Who uses it?: Sailor Moon (Princess Serenity), Tuxedo Kamen (Prince Endymion)

click for larger version In the anime, the orgel is a golden star-shaped locket with a gold chain attached. When the front of the locket opens, it begins to play a slow, music box version of Moonlight Densetsu, the Sailor Moon theme song.

The orgel first appears in episode 026. During the battle with the youma Boxy, Tuxedo Kamen drops the orgel on the ground (although he doesn't realize that he has dropped it), and Sailor Moon picks it up. In episode 028, an illustration helps Mamoru to connect the orgel to the princess, although he still does know know who the princess is or where to find her because he cannot remember his past. Also in this episode, he officially gives the orgel to Sailor Moon.

PGSM - MOON PHASE


First Appearance: Act 36
Who uses it?: Usagi Mamoru

In Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, the locket was known as the Moon Phase. Mamoru gave it to Usagi as a gift in Act 36.


Name Origin


The word orgel is a generic Japanese term for what is referred to in North America and Europe as a "Music Box." Orgel is also the Danish, Dutch, German, Norwegian, and Swedish word for organ music.
